The construction of the LAC+USC replacement hospital, the largest building project ever undertaken by the County of Los Angeles, is now over 60% complete! It is possible to envision the final product since much of the exterior skin has been installed.

  • The replacement hospital has four building components/towers that cover over three city blocks. The Inpatient Tower is the tallest of the towers, with eight floors.

  • The Diagnostic and Treatment Tower is the middle component and houses the emergency room, operating suites, and radiology. This tower is base-isolated, which means it has the ability to sway up to 24 inches in any direction, providing the ability to continue to provide emergency services in the event of a major earthquake.

  • The third tower is the Outpatient Tower, with seven floors.

  • The fourth component of the hospital is a subterranean Central Plant, which powers the new facility and is located next to the Inpatient Tower.

  • A key planning and design concept for the hospital is that it is to be the County flagship hospital, serving as the backbone of the Countys safety net, providing major regional and community emergency, trauma and critical care services. The hospital will have greater diagnostic capabilities, with three MRIs and five CT scanners. In addition, diagnostic radiology services will be centrally located on one floor.

    Transition moving activities are already underway. Six committees have been established to ensure that all activities and issues related to the move are closely managed and monitored. It will take everyones -- and we do mean everyones -- help and support to get us into the hospital successfully.

    In preparation for the move, Medical Center staff will focus on various initiatives that must take place for us to successfully function in the new hospital. They include:

  • Full implementation of the hospital information system order management system and a document imaging system which allows images to be scanned and stored electronically for easy retrieval of records;
  • review and redesign of important patient flow processes to effectively operate in the new configuration of the new hospital; and,
  • Implementation of a right-in-time supply distribution system.

  • This is a wonderful gift to the community and a great opportunity for LAC+USC to showcase its superior patient care, says CEO Pete Delgado. Lets all work together to help achieve this vision.
